Family History Leadership Manuals and Handbooks: Which Ones You Will Need and How to Obtain Them


“Wherefore, now let every man learn his duty, and to act in the
office in which he is appointed, in all diligence.” (D&C 107:99)


The first list below identifies and describes the manuals and handbooks which the church has provided to help each person involved in Family History learn how they can best further the work and assist those over whom they have stewardship.

This list will be followed by a second list, which recommends the manuals each person should have, study and implement, according to their calling.


First List:



1. Member’s Guide to Temple and Family History Work

It would benefit every member who participates in Family History work to own and study this manual.

This guide will help you use the process to identify your ancestors and bless them through temple ordinances. You will also learn about resources that can help you in this process, including the FamilySearch Internet site, which is found at http://www.new.familysearch.org/.

2. Family History Consultant’s Guide to Temple and Family History Work

This guide instructs family history consultants about their responsibilities, how to help members do family history work so they can provide temple ordinances for their ancestors, and teaches about additional resources that can help consultants fulfill their calling.

3. Church Handbook of Instructions, Book 2, Section 9, Temple and Family History Work

Lesson One of the Online tutorials for Family History Consultants and Priesthood Leaders says of this manual:

“The most important thing priesthood leaders can do to provide direction to the work is to read and implement the doctrine, principles, and procedures discussed in the Church Handbook of Instructions, Book 2: Section 9.”


Leaders refer to this section of the Church Handbook of Instructions to learn:

● The doctrines of temple and family history work.

● Their responsibilities in directing these efforts.

● How to organize stakes and wards to help members do family history work.

4. Administrative Guide for Family History

This administrative guide supplements the Church Handbook of Instructions, Book 2: section 9, “Temple and Family History Work.”

This handbook might be thought of as the “how to” instructions. It discusses how stake presidencies, high council advisors, bishoprics and high priest group leaders can:

● Implement and oversee family history programs.

● Provide direction to family history efforts.

The specific responsibilities of all priesthood leaders and family history workers are listed in the chart at the end of this guide.

5. Instructor’s Guide to Temple and Family History Work

This manual is used to teach the Temple and Family History course taught during Sunday School, or at other times. (It could even be taught to individuals or families in their homes.)

The instructor uses this guide, along with the Member’s Guide and the DVD, to teach the course.

6. Temple and Family History Course DVD

The presentations on this DVD are essential to supplement the Family History course instruction.

The Temple and Family History Course DVD provides video segments about the principles taught in each lesson and will help the instructor present the lessons.

Second List:


Which resources are needed to best fulfill
individual stewardships?

Consultants and High Priest Group Leaders need to understand and implement all six items.

Elders Quorum Presidents need to understand and implement items 1, 3 and 4.

Ward Mission Leaders need items 1, 2, 3 and 4 to understand how Consultants can aid in missionary work and retention.

Bishops need to understand and implement items 1, 3, and 4 and would benefit from understanding item 2.

High Council Advisors over Family History need to understand and implement items 1, 3 and 4, and would benefit from understanding items 2, 5 and 6.

Stake Presidents need to understand and implement items 1, 3 and 4.
